Escape (A Club Extraordinaire romance) by PJ AdamsClub Extraordinaire: go there for discipline and adventure, go there for the thrill, go there for sweet, sweet love.

Club Extraordinaire is a place Julie had shared with Nathan. A place where they could indulge themselves in the senses. A place to be free. Going there alone for the first time since Nathan had walked out is a strange and liberating experience, and one full of surprises.

Just who is the masked stranger, and what is it about him that draws Julie so powerfully? Is it the way he moves, or the way he is so confident and masterful? Or is it that he reminds her so strongly of her ex?

And who is the handsome guy who runs the coffee shop across the street from the Club? There’s clearly far more to him than first meets the eye.

Pulled in different directions, Julie must work out what she really wants from life: does she want it all, or does she just want escape?

A story of passion and intrigue, of endings and new beginnings. A story full of the twists and turns familiar to readers of PJ Adams’ work, including the bestsellers Winner Takes All and Black Widow.

She hadn’t anticipated the complex rush of feelings when she came to the club for the first time without Nathan. She hadn’t given it much thought at all. She’d found herself heading here even before she realized. It was a Monday night thing: after a day back at work, the Club was a form of escape.

Monday nights at the Extraordinaire had been a regular thing for Julie and Nathan. So even though she hadn’t been for a few weeks, it didn’t seem at all unusual to be getting ready after work; before she knew it she found herself in a cab with her outfit concealed beneath a long faux fur coat, her mask and other accessories tucked into a discreet leather shoulder bag.

It was only then that she started to feel conflicted. Going to the club alone. It had always been a shared thing, a place to slip into different roles, a different aspect of their relationship. She almost asked the driver to turn back, but no. Once she was inside the Club it would be different. Once she was free of coat and bag, herself again, back in the thick of it all again…

She felt as if she’d come home.

She was greeted at the door with rib-crunching hugs by Madame Superior, a six-foot black woman in needle heels and a leather nun’s habit and wimple. When she had disentangled herself, Julie slipped out of her fur and handed it with her bag to one of Madame’s house slaves.

“It’s been a long time,” said Madame, clapping her hands together. “Lookin’ good!”

Julie had put on fishnet stockings, a leather mini-skirt and a tiny leather bustier with a chain-loop front. A black brocade masquerade mask completed the outfit – little more than a hint of anonymity, but enough to give her confidence. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d dressed up, the last time simply the act of dressing up had made her feel this good.

“So what’s it going to be tonight, honey?”

“I’m good. Just going to look around.”

Madame Superior nodded. “You do that, honey. And remember: if you want fixing up with anyone or anything, just come looking for Madame, okay?”

She’d never really done this, just wandered around, taking it all in. Such freedom to explore was a new thing for Julie.

It was odd to be here and feel so unconstrained – literally! Nathan had been strict about what she could and couldn’t do here. That was part of their thing, the control. He loved to show her off, and she loved to be displayed by him, to feel coveted and wanted. When they played out scenes here, it had usually been in one of the dungeon rooms, with Julie chained to the St Andrew’s cross, or in stocks, or just cuffed to a suspension bar: restrained and displayed, like a slave up for auction. With Nathan it had been all about the control.

She’d never known she was like that, until Nathan. For her, being controlled by him had been the first time she had explored that side of her personality.

But now she saw there was so much more…

The Club occupied several levels of this old brownstone building. Everywhere you turned, there was another room, a party, a bar, a scene. Decadent boudoir rooms, a jail room, a padded cell; countless rooms kitted out with whipping benches, racks and other devices of punishment and restraint…

Just walking around… it was such a thrill! She hadn’t realized how much Nathan had shielded her away from.

She paused to watch a couple in the jail room. He was maybe sixtyish, but with a body that had clearly been looked after, the muscles well-honed, the skin tight, hairless, and covered in intertwined tattoos. His arms stretched above him, pulled tight, attached to iron loops in the wall by heavy cuffs. His body was pulled so taut it looked sculptural. He wore only leather-strapped mini-shorts and a matching leather cap that extended down over his eyes.

Julie remembered one time… She had been suspended from those same iron loops, her face hard against the stone wall, while Nathan had paddled her naked ass. Just as then, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet played in the background.

But now… A skinny blonde woman in a black catsuit pulled back and then swung a thickly-tailed flogger down across the suspended man’s chest. It struck with a flick of the wrist and a sharp snapping sound. The man’s body jerked, and he gasped. The woman said something in a low voice, paused, pulled back, and swung again.

Julie stood against the cell bars, pressing hard against the unyielding metal. Watching, waiting with almost as much anticipation as the man must feel. Another sharp snap, a gasp, a muttered exchange. It was odd… This was such an intimate, private scene with words that could not be heard by anyone but the participants, and yet it was being played out in front of a crowded room.

Everybody loves a rock star

Posted 28 December 2014 By Polly J Adams

Let’s Make This Thing Happen came out a couple of days before Christmas and now we’re starting to see some fabulous early reviews! No matter how many books you have published, it’s only natural to get nervous about those first responses, so it’s lovely to see comments like these from Amazon readers:

This was an incredible read, this book was written with a great story line and excuted perfectly! I loved everything about this story! This is a definite must read!

PJ Adams has fast become a go-to author. Characters that make you care, believable settings and situations, and plenty of surprises along the way.

I enjoyed this book a lot. A satisfying and believable story.

PJ Adams has made Emily and Ray real. With flaws, some really big, and hearts that hurt, and people who we trust that hurt us, they are real, just like the rest of us. … I smiled and cried and felt it in my heart.

And these, over at Goodreads:

Love it! Another great read from PJ Adams! Did I mention hot?!?

What a wonderful story! This is a must read!

I’m not quite ready to heave a huge sigh of relief, but it’s all going well so far 🙂

Let's Make This Thing Happen - rock star romance by PJ AdamsLet’s Make This Thing Happen by PJ Adams

Emily is a successful woman in the tail end of a failing marriage. Ray is the reformed wild boy of rock, back on stage again for the first time in years. As a teenager Emily had Ray’s posters all over her bedroom wall so when she gets backstage tickets it’s as if her dreams have come true. Actually meeting him is an unexpected highlight of the evening, but that’s as far as it could ever go. They come from such different worlds: what could an international star ever see in a grounded, curvy woman like Emily? And how long could they ever keep such a relationship private when everyone from jealous fans to intrusive reporters wants a piece of Ray?

As things turn out to be even more complicated than she had first believed, and when tragedy and angry exes threaten to pull them apart and their secret affair threatens to go spectacularly public, can Emily do anything or has it all gone way beyond her control?

And when one of the sweetest things a man has ever done for Emily turns out to be a lie, will she ever be able to trust him again?

A story of secret romance in the world of the super-rich: an international celebrity and his unlikely BBW love. Steamy and passionate and full of the twists and turns familiar to readers of PJ Adams’ work, including the bestsellers Winner Takes All and Black Widow.

“It’s our song, Emily. It’s your song. It’s for you. Everything’s for you, now.”

Excerpt

Tonight on stage, Ray Sandler was all those teenage fantasies come back to life. Sure, those missing ten years had added some silver to his temples, and he was carrying a few extra pounds, but he was looking good. Emily Rivers soaked up his every move and she felt alive again, for the first time in what felt like years.

She never thought he would actually notice her, though.

How many times as a teenager had she stared up at those posters on her bedroom wall, gazing into his eyes and imagining that, even just once, he would glance in her direction? Their eyes would lock, he would falter in the middle of a line and then pick up again, always the professional. Even if that look was all she ever shared with him Emily’s life would never be the same again.

The Roxette was a small venue. Standing room for maybe two or three hundred, and then a balcony level for a few dozen more by the bar. This was the kind of place where you’d see a band before they made it big and years later you’d tell the story of how you had been one of the select few who had seen them, back in their early days at the Roxette.

Emily stood to the left of the stage, with only one row of bodies between her and Ray. So close she could almost reach out and touch him!

He had a backing band, but they were very much in the shadows as he stood there at the mike, that battered old Gibson semi-acoustic slung low, legs spread and knees bent a little as if he was forever poised to dive off the stage. Black jeans, black shirt open a couple of buttons; hair cropped close and blue-black under the stage lights, apart from where the silver showed through at the sides.

He opened with ‘Poison Berries’, an obscure track off the first Angry Cans album, from before they made it big. It was one for the true fans and the perfect track for the venue, somehow wistful and demanding at the same time. A young man’s song played by someone who now had the skill and depth to make it something else entirely.

Oblivious to the bass, electric piano and drums somewhere towards the back of the stage, Emily watched Ray’s hands on that guitar. Some great musicians look like they’re working hard and you really appreciate all the effort they’ve put in. Others appear to have lazy hands. Hands that drift over a keyboard, hands that stroke the neck of a guitar.

Ray was definitely in the latter category, working that guitar almost effortlessly.

And when he sang, he just leaned into the mike as if someone had moved it almost beyond his reach, and his tone was like honey with a smoker’s rasp. He’d never had that extra depth to his voice before. Maybe it was just hearing him live that brought it out, or maybe it was the years and hard living he’d been through to get here.

“Why does it taste so sweet?” he sang. “When all that you give me is poison?”

There was anger in his delivery; that old fiery magic, but with a new passion that sent chills racing through her body.

She’d expected to feel more self-conscious, here on her own like this because her old friend Marcia had pulled out at the last minute. Instead, she felt just a little bit dirty. Deliciously dirty: standing there with the perfect view of Ray, drinking it all in and feeling like a teenage girl again. You’d never have got this kind of view of him back in the day. Side on, she could follow the line of his leg, revel in that swivel of the hips. He really hadn’t put on too many pounds in his time away, and he’d clearly been staying fit.

Just then, the opening song came to a close. Ray tossed his head back and – briefly – held the pose, and it was exactly how she remembered him from one of those posters.

Was it wrong for a woman in her late twenties to want to squee like a kid?

The next track was something new. That’s why they were here, after all: an intimate, unpublicized gig so he could try out new material, after years away from the limelight. It started with a single, sustained note on the guitar, crystal clear, a little flat and then bending the string until it was perfect and you didn’t even realize that he was holding the same note with his voice, too, as the tones merged. Then the band kicked in and it was back to his trademark choppy guitar style. Something about first times… peeling back the layers until everything’s like new. A comeback song if ever there was one. The melody glided above that choppy, bluesy backing. This was going to be a real grower, Emily thought, and then he was looking right at her and…

He didn’t falter for a moment. It was nothing like that teen fantasy she’d played over and over in her bedroom back when the Angry Cans were just making it big.

His eyes were on her, connecting, and then almost immediately moving on.

She tossed her head back and laughed. She’d had her moment. She’d made eye contact with Ray Sandler! She could die a happy woman.

Then when she looked again, his eyes found her once more.

“Peel me back,” he sang directly to Emily.

She faltered, lost track of what she’d been thinking.

“Make me raw.”

Her legs were like jelly. Who’d have thought she’d be such a girl tonight?

“Find my heart, and make me soar.”

A brief raising of the eyebrows – a reinforcement of that fleeting connection – and then he swung away, and those effortless hands danced up the neck of his guitar as he broke into a solo, full of string-bending and long, mellow sustain.

Her heart pounded in her chest like an animal desperate to escape.

If only her teen self could see her now!

As she watched him, he latched onto someone else in the crowd and sang to her, the bitch. Expert stage technique: sing to a select few and everyone feels as if you’re singing directly to them.

Before she knew it, the track came to a close and she started to whoop and holler.

Ray had lost none of the magic, and tonight was proving to be the perfect antidote to the way Emily had been feeling recently. She really needed to get herself out more, have some fun.

She closed her eyes, and in her head she was back in that moment when his eyes had met hers and he really was singing to her, alone. It had been a nice little fantasy while it lasted, and one she would treasure. And whatever she did, she was most certainly not going to stand here through the rest of the show just waiting for him to make eye contact again…

It’s all happening! A four-book romance cover reveal.

Posted 20 December 2014 By Polly J Adams

Sometimes everything just comes along at once…

After a relatively quiet publishing period for me, all of a sudden I have three new books and a multi-author boxed-set out within the next month, all under my PJ Adams pen-name. Partly this is the result of deliberate timing: book-buyers are always busy in the post-Christmas period with all those gift tokens and new e-readers. But partly, also, it’s just a random thing, as various projects coincide – at least a couple of these books have been a year in development!

So what’s coming up? First, a couple of days before Christmas there’s the novel version of my rock-star romance Let’s Make This Thing Happen (previously published in different form as a three-part serial). Then just after Christmas my BDSM club romance Escape is published (this one was previously published as part of the Club Alpha boxed-set). At the same time we’re launching the first Fifty by Fifty boxed set, the first in a series of four bundles containing fifty romance novels by fifty authors. And then, finally, on 20th January, my new adult romance Damage is published.

These books have been out with reviewers already, and a healthy crop of five-star reviews is coming in. Watch this space for extracts, publication offers and reader response!

Your cheatin’ heart…

Posted 13 December 2014 By Polly J Adams

Backstage Pass (Let's Make This Thing Happen 1) by PJ AdamsI had an interesting set of reviews for my rock star romance serial Let’s Make This Thing Happen recently which made me pause to think.

One reader had taken the trouble to review each of the three books, even though s/he was clearly uncomfortable with the subject matter. For example:

It is difficult for me to like any of the characters since they are all unfaithful. They actually each deserve an unhappy ending!

So, even though the book is well written, I could only rate it 3 stars.

As a writer I’m fascinated by this kind of response: the reviewer praised the writing, and clearly felt strongly about the characters. The issue was their morality: for this reader ‘cheating’ is fundamentally bad and impossible see beyond.

I’m fine with that: the book descriptions made it clear that my characters were in this particular situation, so most readers with such strong views should have adequate warning.

Romance authors are often advised to avoid anything that involves infidelity for exactly this reason: some readers will react strongly. For me, though, it’s an intriguing area that makes me want to write. Unfaithful: Explicit Stories of Escape and Betrayal(I’ve even compiled a whole boxed-set of erotic stories following this theme, with authors including Tanya Korval, Jade K Scott and others: Unfaithful: Explicit Stories of Escape and Betrayal.)

Don’t get me wrong: I do have my own ethical code. I’m not that keen on cheats and liars per se, but I do take a more sympathetic view of people trapped in dead-end relationships who finally decide to do something about it. Indeed, it goes beyond sympathy: for me there’s a real thrill in the thought of someone taking control of their life, their romance, and their sexuality, and moving on.

Taking the example that set me thinking, Let’s Make This Thing Happen is the story of two main characters, each married to someone else.

Emily has a husband who treats her badly in several ways, many of them triggered by his resentment of her professional success. They still share a house but their marriage is dead – part of the story is about Emily coming to realize this.

Ray is a singer, about to embark on a comeback. He’s been separated from his wife for years, but she’s involved in the business affairs of his old rock group and they’ve never got round to divorce.

Emily, in particular, is torn up over the rights and wrongs of her new relationship with Ray, but is it really fundamentally wrong for them to get together? For me it’s a heartwarming story of two people seizing an opportunity (although things are never that simple, of course, and there are lots of twists and turns along the way).

Maybe I should have followed that advice and stayed away from writing about this kind of relationship, but I never have been all that good at taking advice. Maybe that’s even part of the reason I’m drawn to people who are willing to challenge conventional constraints? Or maybe I’m just over-thinking the attractions of a story about people taking a few risks.

Perhaps my moral stance is different to yours. Am I unusual in taking a sympathetic view of someone who’s trying to move on? In even being excited by the thought of someone breaking out and exploring? I’d find it very difficult to draw a harsh black and white line of right and wrong that would over-ride every other consideration… But maybe that’s just me.
